Glärnisch

Overlooking the valley of the Linth lies the Glärnisch massif. At its foot sits an old and comfortable alpine hut, the Glärnischhütte. Although it's an old hut, it's constantly upgraded with new technology. Just like Bitcoin, the hut remains the same at its core while getting additional upgrades every now and then. Compare the old Glärnischhütte shown above to how it looks today!

Feature: Receive to Taproot

Bundled with this new BitBoxApp release comes the newest BitBox02 firmware v9.10.0. With this update, users can now receive Bitcoin to Taproot (P2TR) addresses.

On the receive screen, you can now change the address type to taproot

Taproot addresses are the newest address standard. The biggest benefit of these addresses is that transactions with complex scripts appear the same as standard transactions to the blockchain. Transactions spending Taproot coins are a bit cheaper compared to Native Segwit and Wrapped Segwit, as the transactions are smaller in size.

Although Taproot has been activated roughly 5 months ago, many wallets don't support the newest standard yet, so the default address type in the BitBoxApp will stay Native Segwit for now. You can change to Taproot addresses via the "change address type" tab on the receive screen.

Please note that the anti-klepto protocol is not yet supported for Taproot addresses, due to their use of schnorr signatures.

Feature: EVM Compatibility

Good news for DeFi users: The new BitBox02 Multi-Edition firmware adds support for multiple EVM compatible networks. These include: Binance Smart Chain, Optimism, Polygon, Fantom Opera and Arbitrum One.

The rabby extension allows you to easily switch networks

Users of the BitBox02 Multi-Edition can now switch to these networks within MyEtherWallet and the Rabby browser extension. The BitBoxApp itself does not support these additional networks.

EVM compatible networks are mainly used to avoid high fees on the Ethereum network.

Other changes

With the new version of the BitBoxApp, users can see their coin subtotals in the 'My Portfolio' tab. The subtotal adds up all balances of the individual accounts.

The account loading speed for users with large amounts of UTXOs has been increased considerably.

Within the BitBoxApp, transaction IDs can now be copied without opening the block explorer.

Software rendering of the BitBoxApp can be turned off by using the environment variable 'BITBOXAPP_RENDER'. To use Qt's default rendering backend, use 'BITBOXAPP_RENDER=auto'.
